Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
Published in 1937,when the world was in the grip of the Great Depression, it tells the story of two friends in 1930s California. George and Lennie are itinerant farm workers - one is a a small, single man with “sharp, strong features’’ and characteristics of leadership and parental responsibility, the other with an apparent mental disability, but of a huge physique and very strong - whose simple arrangement keeps them at work. They both have a dream to keep them going. That one day, they will have enough money to buy a small farm of their own and keep cows and chickens and rabbits.
Reading Of Mice and Men is a rough ride. Violence, racism and misogyny are inextricably linked. Steinbeck's direct and unsentimental writing style makes us feel that we know his characters, that we can relate to their struggles. He exposes our many faults and failures but, at the same time, he reveals our capacity for courage, compassion and love.
A nearly perfect book.
